AmpSaver
|
AmpSaver is a screen saver for Win95/98 (and NT?) which works together with the popular Winamp software. As you're probably aware of, there exists a whole lot of neat visualization plugins for Winamp, many of which run in full screen mode. That, however, makes them less useful during normal operation, since you can't use your computer for anything interactive while using that plugin. But, as a screen saver they'd be superb.
And that is just what AmpSaver does! It allows you to use Winamp and its plugins as a screen saver. Simply select a visualization plugin of your choice in Winamp, and set AmpSaver as your current screen saver. When it's time to go into screen saving mode, AmpSaver will start the Winamp plugin (which for obvious reasons should be a full screen plugin).
In case Winamp isn't running when the screen saver activates, you have the options of either starting it, launch a different screen saver, put the monitor in standby/power off mode, or simply do nothing.
One warning though: Due to the nature of AmpSaver, you cannot use the screen saver password protection. Since all AmpSaver does is activating a (for AmpSaver completely unknown) plugin, and then terminate itself to give control over to the plugin, it has no means of providing the usual password protection. The only exception to this is if AmpSaver starts another screen saver because Winamp isn't running. In that case the password protection will work normally. In short, if you need screen saver password protection, don't use AmpSaver.
Feature list:
- Gives the Winamp full screen plugins a good use
- Auto-launch of Winamp if not already running
- Support for putting monitor in standby/power off mode
- Transparent use, since it can execute a "standard" screen saver if no Winamp is found running
Known bug: If you select "Suspend monitor" with "power off", and then preview it with Winamp not running, the monitor sometimes gets stuck in power off mode. This has never occured in a "live" situation though. I haven't been able to determine the cause off this odd behavior, so I'd recommend avoiding the above situation (shouldn't be too hard).

Another Lens
|
|
"Another Lens" displays a magnified view of the area of the mouse cursor. Quite handy, for example, for drawing software. The window contents can be locked, and saved to a file or copied to the clipboard for taking screenshots. Several additional options, like crosshairs, resizing the window and hiding the caption bar and/or main menu. Stays on top of other windows optionally. Note for fellow programmers: Full source code included (Delphi 4).
