Arachne

Arachne is the graphical WWW browser for DOS, which means that:
- it can view hypertext documents with inlined images (HTML language)
- it can browse World Wide Web (HTTP protocol over TCP/IP connections)
- it doesn't require any Windows, OS/2 or Linux (Unix) to run on your PC
But that's not the end ! Arachne can also:
- send and recieve Internet e-mails (MIME compatible)
- edit source code of local HTML pages
- perform FTP downloads and uploads
- call any DOS application as plug-in

A java web spider.
Arale can download entire web sites or specific resources from the web. Arale can also render dynamic sites to static pages. I wrote this utility in 2001 to familiarize myself with the java.net.* package. I'm not actively maintaining it anymore, the code does not shine but the spider is working fine.
Features
- Download and scan user-defined file types.
- Rename dynamic resources. Encode query strings into filenames.
- Set the number of simultaneous connections.
- Options for minimum and maximum file size.
- Domain depth support.
While many bots around are focused on page indexing, Arale is primarly designed for personal use. It fits the needs of advanced web surfers and web developers. Some real life cases are:
- downloading only images, videos, mp3 or zip files from a site.
- manuals, articles, ebooks fragmented in many files to discourage download.
- user-unfriendly sites. Popups, banners and tricky scripts annoying you before you can download a resource.
Multithreaded means that Arale can download more than one file simultaneously. Arale can easily saturate your bandwidth, thus providing the fastest possible download speed for your internet connection.
Currently Arale is a command-line tool. It would be nice to develop a GUI for it.

Ares Tube

Download video movies from youtube, google video, myspaces and to mpeg videos.
Ares Tube, has an embedded browser that allows you to save video files from youtube, google video, Blip Tv, Daily Motion and metacafe to local formats (IPOD, MP4, MPEG). Ares Tube optionally will export your videos, to your iTunes plattform. Browse to the video you want to catch and press "Add to download list". When you are ready press 'Download' to process selected files.
Ares Tube is a simple, easy to use Windows program that enables you to download movies from major video sharing sites (YouTube, DailyMotion, Metacafe, etc) and use them on your desktop. It will automatically convert it into either MPEG (plays on every computer) or MP4 (plays on iPods) and save it for you. Ares Tube can also optionally import the file into iTunes, so that on the next sync it will appear on your iPod Video.
Simply enter in the YouTube page URL and Ares Tube will download the file, convert it, and then import it directly into iTunes. The next time you plug in your iPod video it will automatically transfer. If you don't have an iPod video, you can still watch the movie in iTunes.
Note: Ares Tube requires the .NET framework to be installed on your computer in order to function.
